Behavior Modification - Motivation and Training

When it comes to weight loss, it is important to understand the many factors that influence the way we eat. At Wellspring Camp La Jolla, we provide behavior modification classes that allow our campers to take a closer look at themselves and their eating behaviors. In addition every camper has the option of working one-on-one with a Life Coach while at camp, a relationship that continues for a full year through our Continuing Care Program.

Working with a Life Coach provides a number of benefits. Life coaches are Masters- or Doctoral-level psychologists or social workers.  Research indicates that life-coaching is a highly effective tool for sustaining long-term behavioral changes, particularly with difficult challenges such as weight loss.  In life-coaching sessions, campers learn and practice specific skills necessary for long-term weight control, such as self-monitoring, journaling, goal-setting and contracting.

Another benefit of choosing to work with a Life Coach is that it provides the potential for parents to recoup a significant portion of camp tuition through insurance reimbursement. Campers meet with Life Coaches four times per week—twice in group sessions, once for an extended individual session, and once for a shorter individual session.  For additional information about treatment codes and talking to your insurance company about reimbursement, please click here.

Weekly behavior modification and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) sessions provide the foundation for a successful lifestyle change. Some of the topics covered in Wellspring Camp La Jolla’s supportive behavior modification classes are:

  • Mindful eating in a variety of environments
  • Understanding the relationship between thoughts, emotions and behaviors
  • Building self-esteem
  • Communication skills and relationship building
  • Stress management
  • Social eating and dealing with peer pressure
  • Support systems
