What is so great about this camp?
-
Hi Britney,
Camp La Jolla is definitely GREAT! I was in pre-teen last summer and will be in the teen camp now that I am 13. I admit I didn’t want to walk 8.5 miles and sometimes my legs hurt after the morning run, but once I did it, I was so proud and realized it was up to ME to take advantage of all the awesome choices Camp Offers to everyone. I made wonderful friends, learned new sports, went on the BEST field trips, ate delicious meals (the salad bar is awesome!), and the staff is so caring. You’re never alone, never teased, and if you like the beach, well, it’s there every day. We had dances, talent shows, bonfires, and you choose what activities you want to do each week. If you like biking you can choose that, if you like lap swimming, you can choose that, surfing or aerobics, even karate (which I hope they have this summer! You live in a real college dormitory, a suite! You can decorate your room with your favorite posters too! I love anime so I brought those posters. Of course you will lose weight and learn to keep it off as you can always call Camp La Jolla after you leave; they are there every day to help you and they even call you after you leave to see how you are doing, and send you menus, ideas, encouraging letters, and more more! I can’t tell you all the GREAT stuff as there is so much of it. Call Camp La Jolla - I’d love to meet you at Camp this summer. My family is not wealthy; they had to struggle to send me to camp and I am going to make them and MYSELF so proud! Britney, post again, I think we could be friends.

Hey Nancy! Remember me? Carly? i miss you so much and im soo happy to say that im coming back for the 3RD TIME this summer! this is definitely the highlight of my summer. Lately, ive been slowly losing weight! I walk my dog, drink only water, try to eat the right portions on my food, and ANYTHING that simple that i can do to help myself. But, i know you have some amazing tips that i dont know because i know you nancy, you’re amazing! I miss you so much and i have one more thing. I’ve been having a little bit of trouble with chocolate. Everyone loves it, but im really having a hard time resisting going downstairs to the kitchen and just taking a WHOLE chocolate bar and eating it right there. I need some self-control, but im not quite sure how to build it up. Cant wait to see you!!!

I attended camp last summer for 2 weeks and got the start I needed. Lost 3 lbs there and 38 more since returning home. Am keeping busy, getting in a moderate amount of skiing and going to the gym. But have thought quite a bit about how to have a “winter” camp. I know that there is alot to organize, but would love to toss ideas around about how to make this work. Lots of snow shoeing and cross country skiing, of course. But just think how many calories get burned every hour by a beginning skier!
Living at Tahoe, I have the whole outdoors, would love to see others enjoy a week or two of a new winter experience.
Thanks,
Joan Stratton -

Dear Nancy,
My son and I disagree on desserts. I think while trying to loose weight he should not have any sweets at all - what do you think? -Judy

Join the club Isabel. I guess we know that it doesn’t help but we do it anyways. I still beat up on myself when I do it. I have REALLY tried lately to just REPLACE what I really want to say with a positive comment instead. It has seemed to work for me anyways. If I look at something he is eating/doing and want to say something negative, I just “twist” it a bit. Me personlly could never shut my mouth entirely so to curb the craving to say something (just like food), I say something else. I have recently lost a lot of weight but I still don’t eat very well. I have learned how to finally do it by not depriving myself, but just, taking 1/2 of what I want to take, eating 1 cookie instead of five, sneaking in a “better” choice now and then and refusing to turn on the TV during the day unless I am moving (folding laundry standing up, cleaning…). Even though I have “rules” about what he can have…they are the same rules for all of my kids & I now just try to encourage him to just “lessen or change” his choice. If he insists, as long as he is not breaking a rule, I do still have a problem, but I’m working on that one. If he sneeks food, I explain to him that he is in trouble for stealing & lying & taking away food that was meant for all…and not the fact that he ate it…Instead of focusing on “not” nagging him, try to just “twist it” and throw in something more positve. This worked for me with the food too. I always looked at it as trying to “not” eat the wrong things…instead of focusing on changing my choices when I feel that I can… If I really mess up, I “try” to say, oops, and do better the next time. It works for me anyway. I really could use another parent to bounce stuff off of. Sometimes I feel REALLY frustrated too.

Hey nancy! Guess what, i lost 2 pounds in one week! And im not really doing a lot, only 2 things:
1) i walk my dog almost every day
2) im on a no soda diet, ( i always drank diet anywayz)but, the problem w/ diet soda is that it makes you want sweets more often. so i quit it. its been two weeks so far, and that obviously helped.
Who would’ve thought just 2 little tiny things could help me loose weight
Any other small ideas that can lead to a big result like myn? I’d love to know some if you have any to share!Carly M.

Hi NANCY!!!!!! im 15 and extremely self concious i was wondering if i go to your camp am i required to take off my shirt because i have scars and am extremely embaressed?
Dear Nancy!!
Let me first start off by saying that you are blessing to people such as myself and probably people all over the world you may not even realize it!! My story is one that you may not have read about before. I am Crystal Sain’s mom who has worked for your Camp for the past 2 summer’s. All of her life she has struggled with weight loss and the lack of knowledge on my part to show her the correct way to eat right and keep it off and to be happy and stick to it! Even when she came home for the time before she left for her last year of college wich by the way she graduated with honor’s !! Yeah for her straigt A’s!! I am soo proud of her. She never stopped her life style change . In fact , she kept losing the weight and staying fit for herself even when she cried at the fact that I am heavy and she wants me to get my weight off as well for not only my health but she kinda wants me around for a long time she say’s! LOL. I’ll tell you she is such a motivational inspiration to all her friends or anyone for that matter who come in contact with her. She tells me that I am making excuses that if she can do it so can I. I wouldthink that anyone would love the chance to come to that camp and get the weight off and get jump started on fitness because I know that there they would have no choice and I know that they would have the best time doing it!!. I am writing to thank you and to let you know personally how happy I am that you chose my daughter to work for you because it is truly the best thing ever that has happened to her in her lifetime and to get this under control now was very important. She has been through so much already I really wanted something good to happen to her and it did. I am by no means saying that it was easy for her but what I am saying is that you have inspired these kids to make a difference not only in their lives but to carry it on to others as well kinda like giving back and it is an awesome idea!! As a mother I am grateful in so many ways you just have no idea!! and my daughte thinks u are AWESOME!! I am kinda jealous because you get to have her for however long now and I have lost her to you and California!! I will survive though because that is what we do right!? Raise them and let them fly!! I am sure she will be a wonderful spirit at your camp with lots of energy and a very positive attitude and outlook on life.
Thanks again!!
Darlene Sain
