I attended camp last summer for 2 weeks and got the start I needed. Lost 3 lbs there and 38 more since returning home. Am keeping busy, getting in a moderate amount of skiing and going to the gym. But have thought quite a bit about how to have a “winter” camp. I know that there is alot to organize, but would love to toss ideas around about how to make this work. Lots of snow shoeing and cross country skiing, of course. But just think how many calories get burned every hour by a beginning skier!
Living at Tahoe, I have the whole outdoors, would love to see others enjoy a week or two of a new winter experience.
    Thanks,
    Joan Stratton

    Dear Nancy,

My son and I disagree on desserts. I think while trying to loose weight he should not have any sweets at all - what do you think? -Judy

Join the club Isabel. I guess we know that it doesn’t help but we do it anyways. I still beat up on myself when I do it. I have REALLY tried lately to just REPLACE what I really want to say with a positive comment instead. It has seemed to work for me anyways. If I look at something he is eating/doing and want to say something negative, I just “twist” it a bit. Me personlly could never shut my mouth entirely so to curb the craving to say something (just like food), I say something else. I have recently lost a lot of weight but I still don’t eat very well. I have learned how to finally do it by not depriving myself, but just, taking 1/2 of what I want to take, eating 1 cookie instead of five, sneaking in a “better” choice now and then and refusing to turn on the TV during the day unless I am moving (folding laundry standing up, cleaning…). Even though I have “rules” about what he can have…they are the same rules for all of my kids & I now just try to encourage him to just “lessen or change” his choice. If he insists, as long as he is not breaking a rule, I do still have a problem, but I’m working on that one. If he sneeks food, I explain to him that he is in trouble for stealing & lying & taking away food that was meant for all…and not the fact that he ate it…Instead of focusing on “not” nagging him, try to just “twist it” and throw in something more positve. This worked for me with the food too. I always looked at it as trying to “not” eat the wrong things…instead of focusing on changing my choices when I feel that I can… If I really mess up, I “try” to say, oops, and do better the next time. It works for me anyway. I really could use another parent to bounce stuff off of. Sometimes I feel REALLY frustrated too.

Nancy your blog is awesome. I have a question: Any tips on how to deal with mean people? Espically at school.

Nana showed me this site. I LOVE IT! I want to come back to camp and be a big ’sis’ or on leadership team. I have grown up a lot since last summer. Well, I turned 13. I will be honest that I gained 3 pounds this month even though I go to karate 5 times a week, the gym whenever papa can take me, and I work the WII Fit step exercise 2 half hours each day. The trouble this month was birthday parties with overnight sleepovers and all my friends are SKINNY, so the food was pancakes, cakes, ice cream and stuff I knew not to eat much of. We did play WII games and football at least, but I know I ate way too much there, and my friends don’t gain an ounce when they eat way more than I eat. I know what I must do and I am keeping track of what I eat and nana reminds me to drink water, water, water which I forget to do. Next Sat, I go back for my 3rd season with Miracle League (baseball for disabled kids) where I am a buddy for a boy with autism. He loves to run so I get exercise and love helping. I miss you and Carly and camp and my friends that I made last summer. I don’t know what 2 do about whether I should be in pre-teen or teen, but I want to be in teens cuz I think teens use the big gym, is that right? Will a class at camp be Karate please? I am on the Gold Leadership Team at my dojo and I am a senpai which means assistant instructor for the Little Dragons. They are 5-7 year old amazing kids. I lead warm ups, help with all the stuff each week. I made the honor roll for 1st semester. My nana was like too proud. I want to raise a guide dog, but I can’t do that if I go back to camp. I don’t know what to do but I know I want to lose more weight, make more friends and be a leader too. Okay? Carly, I am wearing my shoes to the gym and walk, but okay, I haven’t worn them to school yet. I LUV the red shorts and I wear them to the gym and around the house to exercise. I hope some of my pre-teen friends will write here too. Thank you. Your Friend, Miranda. P.S. Can I come C U?
